To my dearest Dida,
I want you to have this book, the short stories of which I have re-read countless times, for several reasons. You can say, compare Jeeves to Xavier – with Xavier indubitably coming out the winner. Second and most importantly – it is my favourite book – the principal Upanishads and Sartre are no match for it.
Your Raja Babu

Also! Today is Shweta’s Aashirbad. I hope to live a long happy and prosperous life with her. We are very much alike. She is intelligent and beautiful, and I have been called handsome since I was 2. We shall forge ahead in simplicity, love, pomp, passion and – love again. I know we have your blessings.
Your Grandson, Babu

General comments: Spotted this emphatic statement of possession at a Golpark secondhand book shop. Three names written with mixed scripts (bangla and Roman) are written: Imon, Arka, Arnab. But it appears the claim has been made by Imon who has traced a dotted line from the statement, ‘The one and only owner of this book is’, down to his own name. Most appropriate for a Teni-da book, no?

I have included pictures of an illustrated page and of the illustrated endpapers featuring the titular Dennis. Few things about a book make me as happy as beautiful endpapers, and Soviet publications usually have excellent examples of this.

[conversation with seller]

“কামু তোমাকে ৫০ টাকায়ে দিতে পারব না। তুমি ম’ম নাও, সার্ত্রে নাও, দিয়ে দেব। কামুটা ছাড়তে পারব না, বিশ্বাস কর। মিনিমাম ১৫০-তে বিক্রি হবে।”
[I can’t let a Camus go for 50. You can take the Maughams or a Sartre, but this I can’t let go. It sells for a hundred and fifty at least.]

Echo of the Green Mountains

WP_20151220_002

Authors/Translators: Serhiy Vladov and Mary Skrypnyk
Title:  Echo of the Green Mountains: Ukrainian Folk Tales
Publisher: Dnipro Publishers    WP_20151220_003
Year of publication: 1988
Place of publication: Kiev
Ownership: Not in possession
General comments: This copy was spotted and hastily photographed at the Golpark secondhand book market in Kolkata by two members of the Endpapers team, not leaving time to jot down every bibliographic detail firsthand. According to Worldcat, the illustrator is Nadiya Ponomarenko. There is a famous history of Soviet publications making their way to India, with many issues translated into regional languages. Books for younger readers were usually beautifully illustrated.

General comments:
A gift from Sujaan, co-founder of this blog. Gifted in 2012, I think. A sign of how astonishingly long I had stayed away from Golpark. The title page says, ‘with new illustrations specially made for this edition’. Most of the illustrations are not quite as salacious as the cover image, but they’re all pretty entertaining. The combination of lurid pictures and the serenely sweet birthday message (as seen below) makes this one of my favourite gifts ever.
